It is important to differentiate such maxillary prognathism from proclination of the dentoalveolar processes, or from maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, which are separate entities. Often there is confusion between these entities leading to inappropriate treatment (see below).

In adults, the maxillary protrusion is a specific entity which cannot be treated except by osteotomy, in order to separate the maxilla from the skull base.
